camera tripod????????? I have a Casio Exilim digital camera and am planning to buy a big tripod. Since I am not familiar with this, I would like to know:
Does it matter what kind/brand etc..of tripod I buy? Meaning would my digital camera fit into any of them? Ju s replied: "yes, you have a 1/4 screw connector which is standard on domestic tripods
very expensive pro tripods use 3/8 inch but you wont be buying on of those...
done get one too cheap, as you might as well buy one for the long haul,
about 60 bucks/30 uk pounds can get you something good enough
brands dont matter too much, check out your local camera store, get one tall enough to hold the camera at eye level too."
noodles:) replied: "go to b&h (website) and order a tripod. measure your camera and find one you like and make sure your will fit in it."
c_j_ryan replied: "Pretty much any tripod will work for you. Although I'm sure some cameras might take a 3/8" fitting, the standard is 1/4".
Your camera is fairly light, so most any tripods will hold it. I prefer whats called a "ball head", but you will probably end up getting what's called a "pan and tilt", meaning that it has three knobs, one to adjust the angle of your camera in the horizontal plane, one for the vertical plane, and one that allows it to spin around the tripod. They are fine!
One thing you might look for is a detachable mount, one that allows you to easily take your camera off the tripod, instead of unscrewing every time, it make life a lot easier!
And a hook on the bottom to allow you to add some weight if it's windy, and a bubble level are nice also!" How can i prevent my camera/tripod from vibrating when filming a live concert? Hi i have to film a concert tomorrow and the last time i did this, the vibrations from the bass really shook my tripod and camera. i ended up having to balance the tripod on my foot. any advice? David M replied: "I would first hang a sand bag or something heavy from the middle of the tripod. The weight will help keep the tripod steady. I would also use sandbags around each leg of the tripod. This will also help absorb the vibrations. A guy I know has started using the gel type heating pads. He says the gel is much better at absorbing vibrations. I have not tried them but it sounds like he might have a point. If you have one give it a try."
RJS1121 replied: "HI there. The reason your tripod is probably vibrating might be that it is smaller than designed for your camera. The longer you stretch out the legs, the less sturdy it is and allows for those vibrations most easily. You might try not stretching the legs so far and instead.. lifting the head... or neck. This makes the legs a little thicker and heavier. If you want to try the sand bag method... and it works, but don't have the sand bags, you can use the 1 lb ankle weights inside of a sock." What's the little button on camera tripod platforms? I've noticed that all tripod platforms (where the camera goes on) has a little button. It's next to the screw that holds the camera. What is that little button for? thanks. kittykris2002 replied: "ummmm.....to push? lol
I asked my hubby who was a photographer in another career life, and he doesn't know!"
vienna2001 replied: "I asked the lady at the camera store the same question, and she said it's for video cameras."
dude replied: "It's for more stability. If you look at the bottom of your camera it has a hole for this button. With the screw and the button the camera is more stable."
loving boy replied: "ummmm.....to push? lol
I asked my hubby who was a photographer in another career life, and he doesn't know!"
vfxdoctor replied: "This is only on Video tripods (not usually still camera tripods). Video camcorders have a small hole in them,
just in front of the screw, on the bottom. It is used to
keep the camera oriented, and not slide around,
as you are actively panning and tilting
the tripod head around.
(Since you don't tilt a still camera while it is recording,
it isn't needed on a still camera tripod.)
It's a bad idea to shoot using camcorders on a
still camera tripod, because these stabilizing
push pegs aren't there to keep the camera oriented.
(I made that mistake years ago... Ouch!)
Note: If you are shooting stereoscopic videos with two
camcorders, these are extremely useful for
keeping the cameras parallel. So, it's good to
get similar mounts on your slide bar, if you can find them."

a" What is the thread size on a camera tripod? (small modern digital camera type)? I want an adaptor to put a standard microphone clip (5/8" female) onto my camera tripod (?" male). Any suggestions? taxed till i die, replied: "Camera tripods are a standard metric size."
fivetoze replied: "ask at your local camera shop... or kust look on ebay. i got my adaptor for about a quid... (its a brass sleeve)"
What? replied: "1/4 inch, 20 threads per inch pitch. The protruding mount on the tripod is the male component whereas the camera end is the female.
3/8 inch is often used for tripod head mounts and larger cameras.
You can find microhpone bushings to adapt your tripod to work with your microphone with a 5/8" female thread. Here's one at B&H Photo Video:" Is there a way to put wheels on my video camera Tripod to make it move smoothly? How??!? I need a way to make a video camera roll that is on a tripod. Little Dog replied: "There are two easy ways to do this...
1) A "tripod dolly" is a three-wheeled, three armed, "stand" that the tripod fits onto. Search amazon using "tripod dolly".
2) Since I don't need one very often, I have not gotten a "tripod dolly". I normally transport my gear using a flat bed cart and in a pinch, I stand on there with my tripod and camcorder and get someone to gently push me.
In either case, solid wheels work only when the surface is smooth and clean. If the surface is rough, you might do better with inflatable tires (and let some air out of the tires so they are s little squishy. Small bumps will get absorbed by the squishy tires.
If your camera has a LANC port, try to get your hands on a LANC to control zoom, focus, etc... on the tripod handle." Where to find a very light camera tripod? I'm looking for a camera tripod which can be retracted to less than a foot and weighs less than 1.5lbs, but can be extended at least 40", preferably 50" Fraud replied: "any good photography shop will be able to offer one. Just don't go on weight of the stand. Be sure it can take the weight of your camera and be able to withstand the movement of your body around it also"
tan0301 replied: "by that description I would think it would be pretty flimsy.. make sure it can handle the weight of what you put on it. Check out"
Galan F replied: "Wal-Mart
Slik
Video Tripods are generally light.
Less than a foot to more than 4 foot?... good luck on that dream."
Bill P replied: "I would spend as much as possible on a tripod. 1.5 pounds is not very strong unless you get one of the poly carbonate fiber models and those are going to cost some money."
stennis s replied: "I got one, at radioshack, got it because I want to take it on hikes, it has the dimenions you asked and only cost like 10 bucks. You'll have to make sure it's not windy though or may blow over." What is the best department store to buy a good video camera, tripod, and starter kit? What brand camera?
What store?
What do you reccomend for me to get?(as in starter kits)
Any tips or other reccomendations? ttpawpaw replied: "The best thing for you to do is start by buying one or two magazines that have articles about video cameras, you could even go to your library and look up "consumers reports" in the reference section and read their comparisons. Try to understand what a few of the terms mean. Next go to a reputable electronics store, like Wolf, Ritz or a large shop in your area. Go in and tell them that you are trying to decide what to buy. They can explain the differences, the pros and cons and even let you look at one and even use it in the store. Sometimes the best one is the one that just feels right to you. Some are easy to hold, some are hard to use. It is a real advantage when you can actually hold and try the camera. Good luck. Don't be overwhelmed by all the terms. If you don't undertsand, just say "And just exactly what does that mean". If they don't know themselves they will get the manager who can tell the right info."
Sven replied: "You must select the video camera according to your needs. If you are an amateur user I recommend a basic video camera. But if you are a pro (video for a living) you must buy a most sophisticated video camera. I bought mine here, check if you find one right for you:=-1"
Matt H replied: "Costco and Bestbuy offer great bundels, at a good discount...
As far as brands go, Sony and Canon are generally the highest rated, in Lens Quality, Durability, Image Stabilization, and Low Light performance...
I myself have both... My Sony VX1000 is 10 years old, and still works like new. My Sony VX2000 has been dropped from shoulder height, and doesn't show any signs of it. My Canon ZR85 is also a great cam, it's just lower quality, as it has a smaller 1/6th inch CCD, and only 1, where my two Sony's have three large 1/3rd inch CCDS... Also my Sony's are made with a Magnesium body, and can take extensive stress w/o being chipped or damaged..."

andy120 replied: "My suggestion would be to buy the camera online instead. Depending on what price range you have, a Canon GL-2 is a great 3CCD camera and I have used it for many productions. The quality is excellent. Markertek.com is a good website to purchase this from.
To start, buy a tripod, an extra battery, extra mini-dv tape, a video capture device for your computer (if you do not have one), and a case."
Yulek replied: "Try!" Whats the best value for money camera tripod? I have just taken up photography and been advised to get myself a tripod. What is the best value tripod to buy and why ? Little Dog replied: "That can depend on your camera and what you plan to photograph. But you did not tell us anyhting about either. And you didn't tell us your budget.
The SunPak 7500Pro or 7500TM are low-end consumer tripods that can get pretty tall - and the 7500TM center portion can be removed and it is a monopod..."

Paul R replied: "Manfrotto 190 legs with 390RC head.
Not cheap but nothing worthwhile is. Definately the best value tripod. The only one you'll ever need to buy.
Cheap tripods with plastic components break and aren't as steady.
Pay cheap pay twice.
Why spend a lot of money on a camera and a lot of time and effort getting into it and learning the settings and thinking about your shots only to be let down by a cheap crappy tripod?"
screwdriver replied: "Buy quality - buy once applies to tripods. Any Manfrotto or Gitzo.
A cheap tripod is a pain to use as you frame your shot and the camera droops, so you frame again and so on, and on..., with a quality one you frame your shot, lock the ball head and it stays exactly where you put it even with a heavy camera and telephoto lens.
I'm still using a Manfrotto tripod I bought 40 years ago, there are paint chips all over it, but it still works perfectly.

Bob replied: "Manfrotto 3021, because it is the best value tripod to buy" What's a versatile and practical Camera tripod or monopod? I'm looking for a tripod or monopod that is versatile and practical. Any suggestion is appreciated. In order of importance:
Easy to set up shots.
Stable and secure
Easy to carry.
A good height.
Not expensive.
Thanks. anthony h replied: "Well, the not expensive part really makes your choices much simpler!
Okay, I recommend the Velbon Ultra-Maxi series, especially the versions with a ball head.
Link:
Depending upon the weight of your camera, it's easy to set up, use and it's stable. The height is good, extended it's about chest height on an adult--a good height for things like photographing people (it's more flattering at chest height than eye level).
Easy to carry--definitely. In fact, it's small enough to be taken as a carry-on on an airplane. And when hiking, it won't weigh you down, so you won't leave the tripod behind.
Cost: about $130. That's not expensive in the tripod world."
Bob replied: "The "not expensive" just ruled out any decent tripods :) Easy to carry ruled out even more because carbon fiber is even more expensive. A Bogen-Manfrotto 3021 is a great first tripod but it is neither cheap nor light. It has good height and is extremely stable. I lucked out and bought one on the Bay that carried the European designation of 055. I got it for $60 with a pan and tilt head. It was a steal because nobody else in the know saw it.
A ball head is the next purchase. They are often more expensive than the legs. An Arca Swiss is about $300 used, but it's worth it if you want the quality and performance. A Bogen 3055 is usable and you can get them for about $40 if you're patient and search selectively. It, of course, adds more weight.
If you buy a cheap tripod now, you'll have thrown your money away if you get halfway serious about photography. You'll have to buy a "real" one once you see how troublesome they are. You have only so many mornings and evenings with the good light to really shoot. Make them productive and don't cheap out and wonder why your shots weren't sharp due to an errant breeze."
Edwin replied: "First, you're asking about 2 very different things.
A tripod has 3 legs and therefore is stable and can be left unattended if you want to be in the photo.
A monopod is one leg and is useful to help steady your camera.
You can't go wrong by checking them out at your local real camera store. Bogen, Velbon, Slik, Manfrotto are all good quality tripods and they offer monopods too. Do NOT waste your money on some "bargain" no-name tripod at Wal-Mart or Target, etc.
The tripod should "fit" you - if you're 6' tall and it only opens to 5' then you'll have a sore back from stooping over to use it. I know, I know - the center column extends. This is a big no-no because if you extend the center column all the way you effectively negate the advantages of a tripod. Why? Because it creates what is called a "moment arm". Think of a heavy door on stiff hinges. The farther away from the hinges you are the easier it is to push the door open; the closer to them, the harder it becomes. The closer the head and camera are to the top of the tripod the more stable it becomes.
Check what heads are available for the tripod and monopod you like best. Some swear by the ball head, others by the fluid head. Both should have a "quick release" mount so you can quickly remove your camera if needed. You decide which best suits you.
Plan to pay a couple hundred dollars for a quality tripod and head. I'd shudder at sitting a $2,000 camera and lens on the cheapest tripod available. Actually, there are tripod heads that cost a couple of hundred dollars or more and you still have to buy the legs." Can we use normal camera tripod for canvas? I want something portable for painting. can i use a normal camera tripod for holding on to my canvas?? or maybe need anything else to put on the tripod?? the metal foldable easels are expensive derfini replied: "A camera tripod wouldn't be suitable as it would only hold the canvas at the base. There are small combination paint boxes with inbuilt easels for outside work. Sorry, I don't know brand names. Christmas is coming - why not put an easel on your list if they are expensive?"
claire_asks_why replied: "Check out art supply stores, you can get a basic wooden 'tripod' easel for $20! Metal foldable easels are pointless unless you like to go and paint outside. ..... dont use a camera tripod.
Another tip...if you plan on continue painting for awhile, and think your going to paint bigger down the road, its worth dishing out $150 for a solid easel (h-frame)." |
